Max Steinberg CBE, FRSA, Chairman of the International Festival for Business and CEO at Liverpool Vision, shares some thoughts on the build up to IFB2016:

The UK is one of the world’s most attractive centres for business: In 2015, it was the fastest-growing G7 economy and British companies across the manufacturing, energy, and environment, creative and digital sectors continue to innovate and pioneer.

However, according to the Legatum Institute’s recent Prosperity Report, almost half of all UK small manufacturers saw a fall in exports over the last quarter of 2015. What does this say about the sector? To me it indicates that there’s a disturbing gulf between the global marketplace and British manufacturers.

Geographically, the UK is well-placed to meet the needs of international businesses and the skills, talent and infrastructure certainly exist here to provide a valuable hub of innovation and manufacturing on a global level.

Indeed, the Legatum Institute named the UK as the best place in the European Union to start up in business, with low costs and a robust economic climate. In fact, Britain is the third most economic place in the world to set up a business, making it a home from home for international entrepreneurs.

In this context the International Festival for Business 2016 aims to showcase the UK as a great place to do business, no matter where you are from. Whether it be trading with British companies, sharing ideas, finding innovation partners, investing or starting up, commercial success knows no borders.

IFB2016 provides an opportunity for like-minded business people from all over the world to come together and find the partners that are the best fit for them, enabling them to make the most of unrivalled opportunities.

The first step towards really capitalising on what the UK and IFB2016 have to offer is joining the International Festival for Business Club. Membership is more than just free entry to the festival, it opens the door to a number of unique benefits.

With the world’s largest ‘meet the buyer’ event forming part of the festival’s Meet Your Future Deal programme, there are 6,000 face-to-face appointments with potential investors and suppliers, through which businesses can make connections with commercially-driven peers that are the right strategic fit.

As well as meeting the most ambitious businesses from around the world, Business Club members will have the opportunity to gain access to the expertise they need to help them grow, develop trade opportunities or navigate their export journey.

This service, again free to Business Club members, is called ‘Meet Your Specialist Advisor’.  By registering, businesses can access bespoke advice that will allow them to succeed in their strategic growth ambitions.

With experts in everything from market research to tax and the tender process to logistics, there is no better place to equip companies for international growth.

Other Business Club benefits include ‘Get Fit for IFB2016’  which is a programme of free webinars, resources, news and views that will ensure Business Club members build solid foundations from which to support their growth and export ambitions.

They can also access an export ‘health check’ and get help with identifying opportunities and selecting target markets for their products or services.

IFB2014 resulted in more than £280m of new investment and trade deals and subsequently the creation of thousands of new jobs. I believe this year’s festival will produce even better results.

More than ever before, international trade is at the very top of the business agenda and IFB2016 exists solely to ensure that companies have the opportunity to grow and succeed. My message to them is a simple one: Commercial success is based on making connections, sharing ideas and finding the right matches to do the best deals. You are not alone. That is the reason that IFB2016 is here. Put it in your diary. Join the Business Club. Come along. Do deals.
